Industry Loses Herb Stein

I am sad to report the death of Herb Stein on Saturday 29 December.   

Herb was known widely as one of the founders and leading innovators of the perlite industry.    

He was very bright and entered MIT at the age of 15.  In the late 1940's he became involved as a partner in one of the first companies in the USA to produce expanded perlite.  Not satisfied with production methods, Herb developed a new special purpose furnace, which ultimately became the workhorse of the industry, the 3S-360 horizontal furnace.   The business evolved into one of supplying entire perlite systems and these evolved into the more modern and efficient ones used by many throughout the world today. 

Herb was one of the founding members of the Perlite Institute and in the 1980s received their highest honor, the Lewis Lloyd award. 

He derived great pleasure from his projects, his travels, and from life experiences.  His fluency in four languages helped his business to spread beyond the USA and lead to the development of a German base of operations.  It was there where he met his life-partner of many years, Ruth Gade, who survives him and with whom he shared his most cherished moments.
